In this course, James will offer vocal toning practices, East and West, that focus on the transformation of the chakras, those wheels of energy that comprise many of our psychological attributes – rootedness, creative flow, authority, compassion and communication among others. There is simplicity to these practices, using only vowels, consonants and seed syllables, which enable the participants to easily and affectively draw the chakras towards their optimum rate of whirling. He complements some of the vocal sound with simple Tai Chi like movements, which he has created, that enourage and direct the sounds. This work is in two phases: First, the active, where participants produce these mantra-like tones and stimulate the energy centres and then second, the meditative stage where they listen within and contemplate the effects of those sounds. These phases are equal in the therapeutic effects they produce.
James also includes natural sound rituals with some movement which benefit the wholeness of a person. For example, humming, keening, laughter, groaning and sighing. Then there are the special and unusal Taoist healing sounds/seated movements, directed at organs of the body and their affiliated emotions. These are valuable for thos who place undue stress on an organ through readily expressing negative emotions. The participants are given a taste of tuning forks as a centering tool. Along the way, chants of different traditions will be interspersed among the mainstream vocal practices.
This course empowers the participants to take home the techniques offered and practice them on a daily basis. So, in that sense, the course is complete in itself and is not one of levels. No experience is necessary and no one is asked to make any sounds on their own, creating greater relaxation. They produce their own intuitive notes which gives much more freedom of expression. All that is required is the sincere intent to transform their limited self into their unlimited self. It is this emotional intention that makes the sounds sacred.
