James D’Angelo, an American musician/composer/educator who has resided in England for 30 years, began to develop his therapeutic sound workshops in 1994 in London. These workshops based upon the conscious use of the voice, evolved through his life in music, his studies in Self-actualisation via the Indian Advaita spiritual tradition, his participation in Sufi sacred movements and his practice of Reiki healing.

James has become known as one of the pioneers in the field of vocal sound healing and his reputation has led to invitations to lead courses not only in the UK but also in continental Europe and the USA. He has been an invited speaker at four international sound healing conferences in the USA over the last seven years. In the UK he has also been a course leader at several conferences, some of which he helped to organise. For many years he has been part of the Caduceus editorial staff and contributed articles and reviews dealing with sound healing.

Among the venues where he has taught are: Alternatives [London], The London Mind Body Spirit Festival, The Isle of Avalon Foundation , Hawkwood College, The Samye Ling Centre on Holy Isle [Scotland], The Ammerdown Centre [Bath], The Abbey [Oxfordshire], Claridge House, The Isbourne Holistic Centre [Cheltenham], The Theosophical Society [London], The Tree of Life [Birmingham], The College of Psychic Studies [London], The Pierian Centre, [Bristol] and Brightlife [The Isle of Man].

Initiation into the way of the Shaman began for Elsa with total paralysis following Polio at 11 years of age. She had a near death experience at this time, one of many throughout her life. For three years she was in a wheelchair unable to walk. Gradually with the help of guides and teachers from spirit, she managed to walk and overcome many other obstacles. Those years of struggle have given her a compassion for all people and a desire to work with those who need support and help.

As a young woman Elsa was a natural physic and for many years sat in a healing circle at her local spiritualist church, until one day she became disillusioned with what she was doing. On a physical level the results were outstanding, but she knew there was more to do. She knew she was here to help and teach on a very deep soul level.

There followed many years of confusion and disillusion with society and authority. She never stopped working with and for those in need, those with a soul need, but it was only upon reaching a major crossroads in her life, when she met Howard and they started a journey together that she realised what she was doing had a name: it was called Shamanism. Elsa is also a Director of the UK branch of the Society for Shamanic Practitioners.

Howard & Elsa Malpas have been teaching shamanism for many years and are qualifi ed Further Education Tutors. They now own a centre in Glastonbury called The Avalon Community Centre. Howard and Elsa head the UK branch of the Society for Shamanic Practitioners. Elsa is also a Director of the Isle of Avalon Foundation.

Being sent to a Boarding school in Ireland as a 9 year old was a very special opening for Howard. This school was run by his first Shamanic teacher, and much time was set aside for attunement with nature. It was at this time he opened to his passion for nature and everything natural. He was able to sit quietly in that beautiful ancient Celtic land, communicating eye to eye with the various animals and birds that approached him, these communications gave him a deep understanding of the natural world.

After training as a Chemical Engineer, he spent years fighting the opening he had had as a child, until he could deny it no longer. This was at a major crossroads in his life. The route he took has led him to meet amazing teachers and to sit in a place of wonder and acknowledgement of the spiritual world. The Shamanic way is the cloak he wears that blends his deepest desires with those of helping others find their soul healing. With his partner Elsa he also works in the NHS using complementary therapies to help those with mental health difficulties and those suffering with addiction problems. Howard is also a Director of the UK branch of the Society for Shamanic Practitioners.

John Lockley is a traditionally trained Xhosa Sangoma, African Shaman, medicine man, from the same tribe as Nelson Mandela. John received his calling at the age of 17 at the height of the civil war in South Africa. At 18 he was conscripted into the South African army as a medic. His first assignment was helping to rehabilitate soldiers from the Angolan War. John met his teacher, Mum Ngwevu in 1996. She dreamt about him before his arrival and said that the Great Spirit (uThixo) told her to train him. John apprenticed under Mum Ngwevu for over 10 years, becoming one of the first white men in recent history to be given the title of ligqira inkulu (senior Sangoma) in the Xhosa tribe.

Today John travels worldwide helping people to find their spiritual calling and reconnect to their Ancestors. He calls his workshops & ceremony’s ‘Ubuntu’ (humanity), as they are ancient steps guiding us home to our true selves. John continues to work alongside his teacher every year for at least 3 months, learning from his elders and helping his community. He has an ‘Ubuntu’ fund to aid struggling Sangomas in his community. Ancient wisdom is resting on the shoulders of current Sangomas, and in order for these medicine teachings to survive for future generations, they need to be helped.

John has been given permission by his Sangoma elders to teach people how to pray and reconnect to their Ancestors. It is widely believed that when people know who they are, there is no need to take from others, but only to show humanity (Ubuntu) and compassion. Nelson Mandela demonstrated this beautifully. He was a shining example of a Xhosa elder.

She likewise relishes the craftsmanship that goes into creating a screenplay and her adaptation of Anita Desai's Booker nominated IN CUSTODY, for Merchant Ivory Productions, won the President of India Gold Medal and got an Oscar nomination.

Currently, she is working on an exciting historical screenplay commissioned by Gurinder Chadha of Bend It Films and is completing a series of mythological books for children. Leo Rutherford is a renowned healer, teacher and pioneer of shamanism in the West. He was one of the first people to re-awaken the teachings of shamanism to the UK and founded the Eagle’s Wing Centre for Contemporary Shamanism in 1987. He received his MA in Holistic Psychology from Antioch University in San Francisco and has studied with many gifted shamans. In his work he seeks to bring the ancient techniques of shamanism to help in guiding people of today to find their ‘Path-With-Heart’ and to ‘Walk-in-Beauty’.

Leo trained in many psychotherapeutic and bodywork disciplines before becoming interested in shamanism. His work derives from many sources and is eclectic and holistic, based on the understanding that a human being is a whole rather than a sum of different parts and is, in turn, a part of the Whole of Existence.

He has published six booking including:

  • "The View through the Medicine Wheel" [O Books 2008]
  • "Shamanic Path Workbook" [Arima Pubs 2006]
  • "Principles of Shamanism" [3rd Edition – Crescent Moon pubs 2014]
  • "Spirituality versus Religion" [CreateSpace 2011]
  • "The Book of Games and Warm-Ups for Group Leaders" [2nd edition pub by Singing Dragon 2014]

More About Leo

I feel like I have lived two lives. The first included ten years of rigid boarding school, national service and engineering training, followed by various awful jobs leading up to the opportunity to run a small manufacturing company, which I did for twelve years. While the first 10 years of this were a great experience, even though very challenging, accumulated stress led me to a mid-life crisis of depression and a dire gut wrenching need to make a much greater sense of life.

I was able to take my life apart and start over a second time. I got involved in the burgeoning Alternative movement of the mid 1970’s and took courses, which helped me with left over childhood issues. I re-learned to dance with Gabrielle Roth taking part in her first ever training in 1982. I joined the Psychology MA programme at Antioch University where I came across the ancient wisdom of the Native American people. I gradually came to realise that their psychology, ecology and spiritual understanding is far superior to anything in our world and I have followed this ancient wisdom ever since.
